Music

In 2019, with three years until his 40th birthday, Simon Glud Grønlund wished to celebrate this upcoming milestone by giving his party-goers a special gift: his poetry set to music. By coincidence, singer-songwriter Tony LaMalfa was visiting Denmark that spring. The pair first met in the early 2000s, during Grønlund’s year abroad as a Danish exchange student in Wisconsin. About the same time, LaMalfa himself spent a year in Denmark as an American exchange student. So, naturally, they hit it off!

LaMalfa welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Grønlund, who sent his poetry to the musician as 2019 came to a close. Throughout that winter, LaMalfa began crafting songs for what would become Chime in Kind, the debut album of Greengrove. Their name is a direct translation of Grønlund’s surname.

On April 9th of 2022, LaMalfa joined Grønlund in Copenhagen, where the long-awaited birthday party would commence. To Denmark LaMalfa brought physical copies of the EP, and together, Greengrove presented these party favors to Grønlund’s guests. Bold yet candid and unassuming, Chime in Kind blends vivid coastal imagery with themes of altruism and universal love.

Music performed by Tony LaMalfa (acoustic guitar, vocals, and background vocals), with much appreciated contributions by talented producer Joe Sly (electric guitar, piano, bass, and additional background vocals) and Felix Sly (coronet). Gratitude to Ashley K. for her lovely graphic design!
